Reading 1

Nm 21:4b-9

With their patience worn out by the journey,

the people complained against God and Moses,

“Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert,

where there is no food or water?

We are disgusted with this wretched food!”

In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents,

which bit the people so that many of them died.

Then the people came to Moses and said,

“We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you.

Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us.”

So Moses prayed for the people, and the LORD said to Moses,

“Make a saraph and mount it on a pole,

and if any who have been bitten look at it, they will live.”

Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole,

and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent

looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Hearken, my people, to my teaching;

incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable,

While he slew them they sought him

and inquired after God again,

Remembering that God was their rock

and the Most High God, their redeemer.

But they flattered him with their mouths

and lied to him with their tongues,

Though their hearts were not steadfast toward him,

nor were they faithful to his covenant.

But he, being merciful, forgave their sin

and destroyed them not;

and let none of his wrath be roused.

Reading II

Phil 2:6-11

Brothers and sisters:

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.

Rather, he emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

coming in human likeness;

and found human in appearance,

he humbled himself,

becoming obedient to death,

even death on a cross.

Because of this, God greatly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name

that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue confess that

Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel

Jn 3:13-17

Jesus said to Nicodemus:

“No one has gone up to heaven

except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.

And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,

so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

so that everyone who believes in him might not perish

but might have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,

but that the world might be saved through him.

Trong cuộc hành trình qua sa mạc, dân Ít-ra-en mất kiên nhẫn.₅ Họ kêu trách Thiên Chúa và ông Mô-sê rằng: "Tại sao lại đưa chúng tôi ra khỏi đất Ai-cập, để chúng tôi chết trong sa mạc, một nơi chẳng có bánh ăn, chẳng có nước uống? Chúng tôi đã chán ngấy thứ đồ ăn vô vị này."

₆ Bấy giờ ĐỨC CHÚA cho rắn độc đến hại dân. Chúng cắn họ, khiến nhiều người Ít-ra-en phải chết.₇ Dân đến nói với ông Mô-sê: "Chúng tôi đã phạm tội, vì đã kêu trách ĐỨC CHÚA và kêu trách ông. Xin ông khẩn cầu ĐỨC CHÚA để Người xua đuổi rắn xa chúng tôi." Ông Mô-sê khẩn cầu cho dân.₈ ĐỨC CHÚA liền nói với ông: "Ngươi hãy làm một con rắn và treo lên một cây cột. Tất cả những ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn lên con rắn đó, sẽ được sống."₉ Ông Mô-sê bèn làm một con rắn bằng đồng và treo lên một cây cột. Và hễ ai bị rắn cắn mà nhìn lên con rắn đồng, thì được sống.

Dân tôi hỡi, này nghe tôi dạy bảo,
lắng tai đón nhận lời lẽ miệng tôi.
₂ Mở miệng ra, tôi sẽ nói đôi lời huấn dụ,
công bố điều huyền bí thuở xa xưa

Khi Chúa giết họ, họ mới đi tìm Chúa,
mới trở lại và mau mắn kiếm Người,
₃₅ mới nhớ rằng: Thiên Chúa là núi đá họ ẩn thân,
Thiên Chúa Tối Cao là Đấng cứu chuộc họ.

₃₆ Miệng họ phỉnh phờ Chúa, lưỡi họ lừa dối Người;

₃₇ còn lòng dạ chẳng chút gì gắn bó,
chẳng trung thành giữ giao ước của Người.

₃₈ Nhưng Người vẫn xót thương, thứ tha, không tiêu diệt,
nén giận đã bao lần, chẳng khơi bùng nộ khí.

Đức Giê-su Ki-tô
vốn dĩ là Thiên Chúa
mà không nghĩ phải nhất quyết duy trì
địa vị ngang hàng với Thiên Chúa,
₇ nhưng đã hoàn toàn trút bỏ vinh quang
mặc lấy thân nô lệ,
trở nên giống phàm nhân
sống như người trần thế.
₈ Người lại còn hạ mình,
vâng lời cho đến nỗi bằng lòng chịu chết,
chết trên cây thập tự.
₉ Chính vì thế, Thiên Chúa đã siêu tôn Người
và tặng ban danh hiệu
trổi vượt trên muôn ngàn danh hiệu.
₁₀ Như vậy, khi vừa nghe danh thánh Giê-su,
cả trên trời dưới đất
và trong nơi âm phủ,
muôn vật phải bái quỳ;
₁₁ và để tôn vinh Thiên Chúa Cha,
mọi loài phải mở miệng tuyên xưng rằng:
"Đức Giê-su Ki-tô là Chúa".

Không ai đã lên trời, ngoại trừ Con Người, Đấng từ trời xuống.₁₄ Như ông Mô-sê đã giương cao con rắn trong sa mạc, Con Người cũng sẽ phải được giương cao như vậy,₁₅ để ai tin vào Người thì được sống muôn đời.

₁₆ Thiên Chúa yêu thế gian đến nỗi đã ban Con Một, để ai tin vào Con của Người thì khỏi phải chết, nhưng được sống muôn đời.₁₇ Quả vậy, Thiên Chúa sai Con của Người đến thế gian, không phải để lên án thế gian, nhưng là để thế gian, nhờ Con của Người, mà được cứu độ.
